Skyscraper Marble Maze: What Was I Thinking?

(Sorry for the blurry picture - I tried.)

In order to enjoy the freezing cold temperatures with my kids, I decided to bundle them up and take them grocery shopping.  Actually, we were out of tp.  And bread.  And milk.

Does anyone else put off grocery trips until they can no longer be avoided?  Maybe it's just me.

So, as we were strolling through Aldi (fist pump for Aldi!  they save us more money on groceries than...any other grocery store.), we stopped at the leftover Christmas toy section to see what might be had for bargain basement prices.

And my 4-year-old son spotted something perfect.  He jumped up and down.  He "loved" it - it was the Skyscraper Marble Mania Marble Run Set.  The boy had some extra Christmas money leftover.  I thought it looked like good fun, so I said the word he was anxiously waiting for.  "Yes!"

After helping carry in and put away some groceries at home, the kids opened the box and let loose the many, many pieces to the marble set.  My 8-year-old worked on it for 4.5 minutes and declared it too hard to put together.  How hard could it be?  Don't the pieces just snap together?  I still hadn't looked at it.

When dinner was almost ready, I stepped into the living room to check their progress.  There were 400 bajillion pieces all over the living room floor.  My husband, just arrived home from work, took one look at the set and said he'd help the kids after dinner.  I love this man!

He spent the next 2-3 hours constructing the set.  It was very cool, but labor intensive.  Oh - I think the box advertised it in this way:

One thing I should have read before purchasing the set was:

And the other thing I should have noticed was:

Yes - you read it.  Allow a minimum of 3 to 4 hours for completion.

I purchased this on a whim to make my boy happy, and handed it off to my husband because there was no way I could construct this by myself...so that it would actually work.

Look at the results of his work - we added a couple of rubber bands (aka gumband - fist pump for Pittsburghers) to help the marbles roll down the track.  That was all I did.  I love this man, and that he spent such a large chunk of his evening building this for our kids.

Okay - I'll admit it.  We both love building toys.  Is that strange?  I sort of think it is a gift, especially in a homeschool family.  Next time I will read the box.  I hope.  He really hopes I will, too.
