5 Fun Indoor Activities for July 4th (just in case)



Are you hosting the 4th of July party at your house?  Have you planned on unpredictable weather?  If there's anything I know about Pennsylvania weather, especially of late, it's totally unpredictable!!   

Here are a few ideas to keep kids occupied if the weather should turn ugly as we celebrate Independence Day:

(...or if you need some time to prepare food or set up tables and chairs or maybe you discover you need to run to the store for that really important thing you forgot...)


1.  Independence Day Quiz!!





How well do your kids know Independence Day trivia?  How about you? 

Might be fun to challenge your kids and show them mom (or dad) still knows their stuff.

(I took the quiz and scored 10/10.  Woot woot! This mama's still got it!!)


2.  Pop Rockets



We've made these using film canisters, which you can get for free anywhere film is developed.  I think ours came from the Rite Aid photo department.  I think the M&M's tubes will work better - and you get to eat the M&M's before making the project.  BONUS!!   We simply used Alka Seltzer 1/4 tabs and water, but feel free to experiment!!


 3.  Coloring Pages from Easy Peasy and Fun




What kid doesn't love to color?  They can hang these on the fridge decorate for the party!!


4.  Wii Fishing

It's such a simple game, but kids and grown-ups alike can't resist trying to "catch the big one."  Fun for ages 0-100 while you are barbecuing, shucking corn, or when the kids get stir crazy because it's raining outside.


 5.  Wii Baseball

What better way to celebrate our national holiday than to play our favorite past-time?  Batter up!!  Even the little guys can play this game because all it requires is swinging the remote like a bat if they're batting, and acting like they're throwing if they're the pitcher.  Simple and fun!  (Note: make sure their wrist straps are secure prior to play.  You don't want any rockets red-glaring from your broken t.v., if you catch my drift)

It All Began With Pancakes

Here are a few pics from our first day of school.  These tell a much better story than my foggy memory could put together. We have kept the subjects light, had plenty of time outdoors, and a few field trips!  It all began with pancakes.  Really!  As I rushed around making sure everything was ready, my 10-year-old requested pancakes for breakfast, to make the first day of school really special.  I took the bait.  "Ok- but you have to make them."  And she did! I'm trying to work on learning independence, time management, and new skills.  Cooking is high on the list.  The girls now know how to make brownies, scrambled eggs, five-minute rice, pancakes and grilled cheese sandwiches.  Also, microwave quesadillas and popcorn (of course!). Licensed to Laugh

While reading (and thoroughly enjoying) Jen Hatmaker's For The Love , a number of things have occurred to me.  Things I knew but have forgotten.  Things I haven't realized.  Things I should keep in the forefront of my mind. Number one on the list is I have a license to laugh.  To find humour in things.  To find joy in life.  Life is not meant to be drudgery. My go-to release is laughter.  In the most stressful situations, I laugh.  And sometimes it seems totally inappropriate.  Like when my dear hubby was sick and dehydrated with the flu a few years back.  I called a precious friend late at night and asked her to sit with our children while I took my invalid husband to the ER, which she did, because that's what friends do.  Hallelujah! The Dirty Dishes Prayer

Sigh.  There they are again.  The dishes. Somehow, if I don't do the dishes for a few days, they pile up. Do you believe that? And if I have run out of paper plates, as I sometimes do, the dirty dishes are piled everywhere! In the sink, on the counters surrounding the sink, on the stove, all over the countertop and the kitchen table. Once we've run out of usable space in the kitchen, I know it's time. Now, I am not usually a person who procrastinates. But sometimes we are BUSY doing other things.  More enjoyable things.  Traveling, having a picnic, going to an amusement park, or enjoying the warm weather (because we know our good weather is limited). This week, my lupus kicked up and drained my battery down to almost nil.  That means I did even less in the housekeeping department than usual.  And so, this afternoon, when my energy returned, I did it.  I knuckled down and spent an hour and a half cleaning up the kitchen.
