God To the Rescue!!
This week, while reading Home Sweet Home-school by Sue Maakestad, I ran across a rather remarkable story about a woman in dire circumstances and her prayers to God for help. I could hardly wait to share it with you!
-----
"This is the story of a woman who was stranded in her home during a devastating flood.
As the storm pounded the valley, the floodwaters rose higher and covered her front porch. A man on a horse came by and offered her a ride. She said no, she was asking God to deliver her from the storm.
The waters inundated the bottom floor and she went upstairs and sat on the roof of the porch. A man came by in a rowboat when the water was at the eaves and told her to climb in. She gave him the same answer.
She had climbed to her last perch on the roof when a guy in a helicopter offered her a lift and she turned him down.
The she cried out to God, 'Where are you, Lord? I asked you to deliver me from the storm and nothing has happened.' A small patch cleared in the clouds and a voice came back from heaven: 'My daughter, I sent you a horse, a rowboat, and a helicopter. What more do you want?'
Don't blame God for your problems if you don't listen to his answers. He's there and is always faithful to send you all the help you need. But I doubt he would have struck Goliath dead on the spot if David had sat on a rock with his hands in his pockets praying, 'Kill the giant, God. Amen.'"
----
Although I believe wholeheartedly that God could have struck Goliath dead without any "help" from David, I know God also equips people to be able to serve him. Each man that showed up to rescue the woman in distress was provided by God in answer to this woman's prayer.
My husband began pastoring a church a few months ago. A small church in a small town that has not grown in some time. They sort of...lost the fire. The desire to grow and change and keep up with the times. They are a warm and friendly congregation that needs some help.
As the pastor's family, we had two choices:
1. We could attend church as usual, sit on our hands, and pray for God to help the church, or
2. We could roll up our sleeves, do some hard work, and pray for God to help the church.
As David trusted God's lead on facing Goliath, taking up those 5 smooth stones and his trusty sling, we are trusting God to lead us in the way we should go.
I don't know what God has planned for this little church - but I am excited to watch its story unfold.
I don't know what challenges you are facing today, but I encourage you to give your worries to God and trust Him to answer your prayers. Who knows? He may do something amazing!
