Update on Dyslexia Letter
We received confirmation that our letter was received about a week ago. Yesterday, a big yellow envelope arrived in the mail. I can't wait to sign and return the consent form.
It's really happening! We're really doing it.
The most amazing thing has happened since I posted To Test or Not to Test? and Signed, Sealed, Delivered. People are sharing their stories with me. Growing up with dyslexia, or having a child or relative who struggled in school and later found out they were dyslexic. Adults who have struggled with dyslexia their entire lives, but have figured out ways to accommodate their needs so they can be successful in their fields despite difficulties. Did you know Charles Shwab is dyslexic? Yeah. And many other famous people you would never have thought had a difficulty in their lives.
Recently, I reconnected with a friend and was told that their school district refused to test her daughter until she was in 3rd grade. She said I saved myself the trouble and avoided a hassle by waiting as long as I did. When she saw my child's school work, she said it looked just like her daughter's work. Hmm...interesting.
Here I was, worrying because I thought that I had waited too long. In Overcoming Dyslexia, by Sally Shaywitz, M.D., it is said that 3rd grade is almost too late to test your child and to begin therapies. Apparently our local school districts don't agree with that line of thought.
So I've been stressing about this whole thing for almost the entire year, and it turns out everything will work out for the best.
If only I could remember and believe one of my favorite Bible verses during these times:
"Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to the day?
Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself."
God has it under control. I just need to do my part, and He will take care of the rest.
And I need to remember to pray. About each situation, and for peace during these times.
God is able. He hears me. And He has answered more prayers than I can count - big ones and little ones.
I need to remember. To trust. To pray, and to breathe.
It's really happening! We're really doing it.
