Leaving It All On The Track

I am very much alive,
but today I went to a funeral.

of a man I didn't really know.
just his first name and that he sat in a pew on the other side of the church.

we've only attended this church for a few months, so i don't know anyone particularly well.

he was at church last time i was there

and today i watched as his casket was placed in its grave.

and the mourners sat in silence.

but there was no crying.  very few tears.

was it because this man wasn't loved?  unlovable?

no.  it was just the opposite.

every story i heard about him
 every tale shared
spoke of a happy life.

a content man.

never raised his voice in anger,
never worried about things, even when he knew he faced death
was a good employer
who hired men no one else would take
to give them a new start in life
loved his wife and spent time with her

loved Jesus who forgave his sins and told people so

raised money to improve the church building
took immaculate care of the building itself
with the help of his son

no one had to shed a tear because
there were no regrets.

he had run his race
he had finished his course
and he went to meet Jesus.

can you or i say that if we died today, we would have such a story?

what if today or tomorrow were our last day on earth?

do you live in such a way that you have left it all on the track?
gave it your best?
are content with your efforts?

or are you discontent?
rushed?
wishing you had more time to spend with your kids or husband?

what will your eulogy be like?
do you know what will happen - where you will go when you die?
we might not like to think about it, but each of us will have our turn.

this man's family chose this Bible passage for him, because it described his life so well:

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."

i hope that my testimony, when it is my turn, will be as clearly understood as this man's was.

i want to leave it all on the track.
