What Would You Do For 5 Dollars? (Part One)

Over Thanksgiving weekend, I took in some Duck Dynasty with my hubby.  I haven't watched the show in some time, but I always enjoy it when I get the chance.

So Phil Robertson was goaded into going to a petting zoo with some of his grandkids.  At the end of the visit, the farmer asked if the kids would like to try mutton busting.  He provided helmets and chaps for safety, then the kids mounted the sheep one at a time and gave it a try.

The little boy fell off almost immediately.  Mom said, "Good try.  There are no winners or losers.  You did your best."

She gave the same kind of advice to her daughter who was climbing up onto the sheep for her turn.  "Just do your best, honey.  There are no winners."  This is when Papaw Phil stepped in.

He said something to the effect of "Honey, there are winners and losers.  It is important to try to win.  Do your best.  If you hold on to that sheep the longest, I will pay you five dollars."

Would you believe that, when they let that sheep go, it charged across the corral like a mad bull?  You know what else?  That little girl dug her fingers into that sheep's wool and held on for dear life.

She wanted to WIN
And she wanted Papaw's $5.00.

Do you see what happened here?  Mom set the bar low and the first kid fell off that sheep in 5 seconds.  He had no incentive to stay on.  Papaw set the bar high and the second kid dug into the sheep's wool and her inner strength, and stayed on.

What does that say to you?

I'll share what it spoke to me in What Would You Do For 5 Dollars (Part Two)
